Egnatia and the sea

National Archaelogical Museum of Egnazia “Giuseppe Andreassi” English Version

Angela Ciancio, Fabio Galeandro, Francesco Longobardi

Traduttore Clara Testini

On the underground floor of the National Archaeological Museum of Egnazia (Fasano - BR) a new exhibition section, dedicated to the relationship between ancient Egnatia and the sea, has been recently inaugurated. This topic deserves an in-depth study and a particular path to a deeper understanding of the story of this important city of ancient Puglia. Through an immersive and interactive approach, the new exhibition provides the view of the seabed off the coast of Egnazia, where structures related to a Roman harbor lie preserved. Submerged archaeological finds are presented: objects that tell us about the life of men engaged in navigation, in the exploitation of marine resources, in sea trade, and that recall the many jobs that have always been connected with the sea since ancient times. In addition, the visit to the exhibition offers a specific insight into underwater archaeology, an important field of archaeological research that is an amazing tool for understanding and unraveling the history of past peoples, through shipwrecks and lost cargoes, as well as for reconstructing sea floor morphology.
